When setting up, developing or improving your HR policies and processes it can be a bit daunting knowing where to start first and what will add the most value to your business. To help you, QBH Solutions have come up with our definitive list, in order or priority, of Key HR Policies. It is worth remembering that each organisation is different but the following 5 are a great place to start.

No 1 Disciplinary Policy

It is almost inevitable that at some point you will need to challenge or manage issues around performance, conduct and behaviour. An effective disciplinary policy will allow you to manage these issues safely and confidently.

No 2 Recruitment & Selection Policy
A good recruitment and selection policy is key to finding and keeping the right people for your business, it should address the job role, advertising the vacancy, review of applications / CV’s, interview processes and notes and notification of appointment. Don’t forget to include or reference any pre-employments checks that you need to undertake for your business or industry (DBS, Right to Work etc)

No 3 Grievance
Hopefully you will never need this but with recent changes to legislation allowing ex-employees to raise historical grievances it is a good policy to have. Make it clear what your processes are for people to raise a grievance and how it will be managed and addressed. It is also worth training those responsible for implementing it

No 4 Flexible Working
Again a recent change of legislation has opened up the opportunity of flexible working to all staff (please see our previous blog post). A good flexible working policy should define what flexible working is, how a request can be made, the time scale in which people can expect a response and how it will be monitored.

No 5 Equality & Diversity Policy (formally Equal Opportunities)
An equality and diversity policy is an important HR policy and should clearly state a commitment to equality of opportunity for everyone and have a statement opposing any form of discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, caste, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, medical condition, disability and age.
